A Performance Comparison Of Windows 10 vs. Windows 8 vs. Windows 7

 

In terms of the user interface, most reviewers of Windows 10 agree that it's a great upgrade from Windows 8.1. But how does it fare in terms of performance?

TechSpot put the new operating system through its paces, running benchmark tests on the same machine with all three operating systems (Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10) newly installed and updated. The testing PC featured an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 graphics card.

The end result is a bit of a mixed bag. Windows 10 routinely outperforms Windows 8.1 pro, which was outperformed by Windows 7. Synthetic benchmarks such as Cinebench R15 and Futuremark PCMark 7 show Windows 10 to be quicker than Windows 8.1 pro, which was faster than Windows 7.

Windows 8.1 Pro was the fastest in other testing, such as booting, booting two seconds faster than Windows 10. In Windows 10, performance in specific applications, such as Photoshop and the Chrome browser, was also a little slower.

Windows 10, on the other hand, awoke from sleep and hibernation two seconds faster than Windows 8.1 and seven seconds faster than the sleepyhead Windows 7.

The benchmarking tests show Windows 10 functioning similarly to prior versions of Windows—sometimes a little quicker, sometimes a little slower—for the most part.

So, what exactly does this imply? According to the analysis, if you're thinking about upgrading to Windows 10, you won't notice a substantial reduction in performance or have any difficulty operating Windows 10 on any semi-modern hardware that can run Windows 7 or higher. Although it isn't as wonderful news as claiming that Windows 10 provides a significant performance gain, Windows 10 has performed admirably thus far.
